At Clearview Intelligence, we are committed to delivering innovative road safety solutions that make a tangible difference to driver confidence and road user safety. Our latest deployment of Solarlite solar-powered road studs in Milton Keynes showcases how we continue to evolve our technology to address real-world challenges.
Historically, our Solarlite road studs have been used to enhance delineation on roads where white lining and street lighting require reinforcement. However, following discussions with Milton Keynes Council, we identified a new application to improve roundabout visibility and reduce collisions.
Addressing a Critical Safety Concern
Milton Keynes Council approached us after identifying a pattern of collisions at two key roundabouts—South Overgate and Fishermead. Drivers were failing to recognise they were approaching a junction, leading to crashes where vehicles ended up in the middle of the roundabout.
To tackle this issue, our team conducted an in-depth analysis of driver behavior and environmental conditions at these locations. The data revealed that many drivers were not reacting to existing signage and road markings, particularly at night. This insight guided our decision to install Solarlite studs in a new way—positioning them around the inside face of the roundabouts, directly facing vehicles as they approached.
A Proven, High-Performance Solution
Our Solarlite road studs provide up to ten times greater visibility than traditional reflective road studs, illuminating distances of up to 900 meters. This substantial increase in visibility significantly enhances driver reaction times, reducing the risk of last-minute maneuvers and potential collisions. Furthermore, Solarlite studs operate for ten nights after just three hours of bright daylight charging, ensuring reliable performance in all weather conditions.
Making Roundabouts More Visible
By strategically placing the Solarlite studs around the inside face of the roundabout, we have created a continuous line of light that enhances junction awareness. The illuminated studs ensure that the roundabout is clearly visible at night, guiding drivers effectively and making it unmistakably clear that the road does not simply continue ahead.
Alastair King, our Head of Product Management, emphasised the impact of this innovation: “This deployment of our flagship Solarlite studs exemplifies how Clearview Intelligence is continuously innovating to enhance road safety. If you look at Google Maps images of the roundabouts before our improvements, you can even see a vehicle that had crashed into the signage. Hopefully, with these road safety enhancements in place, incidents like that will now be a thing of the past.”
Expanding the Application of Solarlite Technology
The successful implementation in Milton Keynes demonstrates a new and effective road safety application for Solarlite studs. Our technology has already been deployed across a variety of environments, including town and village centres, rural roads, and motorways. With this new approach, we are extending the reach of Solarlite technology to further enhance road safety at roundabouts and other critical junctions.
At Clearview Intelligence, we remain dedicated to innovating and adapting our solutions to create safer roads for all users. The deployment in Milton Keynes is yet another example of how our expertise in intelligent road safety solutions continues to drive positive change in transport infrastructure.
