Clearview Intelligence’s SolarLite road studs are well known for their carbon-saving and safety-improving performance on roads, but they’re now proving their value in the rail industry too.
ScotRail has recently installed SolarLite studs in railway sidings to delineate driver walkways and depots where trains are parked overnight, improving visibility and safety for staff moving around these areas.
The SolarLite road studs use high-visibility LED light to deliver clear guidance in all weather and lighting conditions – unlike traditional reflective studs, which only shine when illuminated by headlights. Research has shown that on roads, LED lighting gives drivers more time to react to layouts, junctions or hazards, and can be visible for up to 900 metres – reducing crash rates by more than 70% compared to traditional lighting.
Customer Kelly Rail commented that “photos don’t do it justice” when describing the impact of the studs in railway sidings.
“Our studs provide a carbon-free at point of installation solution and greatly improve safety, whether they’re used on roads, for cyclists and pedestrians, or anywhere else that illumination is needed,” explained Alan Vass, Business Development Manager at Clearview Intelligence. “Even in the depths of a Scottish winter, the studs will shine all night after just a few hours of daylight. They’re reliable, sustainable, and require no power connection – making them the ideal choice for anyone seeking a safe, low-carbon delineation solution.”
SolarLite studs are already widely used across the UK’s road network, particularly in areas without street lighting. A range of SolarLite solutions are also being trialled through the Live Labs 2 project in the East Riding of Yorkshire, where an independent study found that replacing street lights with solar studs could save hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO₂ without compromising road safety.
At Clearview Intelligence, we’re proud to see how SolarLite technology continues to expand beyond the highway – helping create safer, more sustainable environments wherever clear guidance and visibility are needed.
