SolarLite road studs help A4128 to retain most improved UK road recognition for second year

We were delighted to see that the A4128 in Buckinghamshire has once again been recognised as this year’s most improved road in the UK for road safety solutions being installed, according to the ‘Measuring to Manage’ EuroRAP 2013 report produced by the Road Safety Foundation.

One of the key elements highlighted in improving the road safety solutions in place on the A4128 has been the installation of Clearview Intelligence's SolarLite road studs.

The 11km stretch of single carriageway leading from Great Missenden to the north and High Wycombe to the south first took the top slot in 2011, and has retained the leading title in this year’s findings, published in October.

The report states: ‘Over the two survey periods, the route has moved from one of the highest risk with a medium-high risk (red) rating in 2002-2006 to one of the safest, rated low-medium (yellow) risk in 2007-2011. During this time the number of fatal and serious crashes dropped by 87% from 31 to 4 incidents. No fatal crashes occurred in the second data period, while improvement was seen in all major crash types, crashes at junctions were cut by 91%, and those involving vehicles running off the road were eliminated.’

Buckinghamshire County Council has undertaken a number of measures to improve road safety since 2004, and have implemented a review of speed limits, improved road signs, and enhancement of road markings to maximise visibility at night and during wet conditions.

A key contributor in these dramatic improvements in safety and year-on-year road safety statistics has been the installation of SolarLite active road studs on this notoriously dangerous stretch of road.

The A4128 installation is a superb example of where the SolarLite road studs have made a significant improvement in night-time road casualty levels. The installation of our active road studs has meant that road users have increased visibility of each lane and changes in road layout, so that sharp bends, dips, hills and other landscape changes are now clearly defined in their natural line of sight considerably before this would normally be seen in a vehicle’s headlight beam.

The recent success of the A4128 case study also highlights a recent article on Britain’s Top 10 deadliest roads, and some of the statistics from page 10 of the EuroRAP report.

From the 2012 report, we carried out additional research and statistics published in this blog post recently, highlighting that on average for the Top 10 highest risk roads, over 75% of the serious and fatal accidents occur at junctions – either as a result of running off the road at bends, or from head-on collisions.

In the 2013 report that examines the UK road network over a longer time period, there’s still on average 70% of the serious and fatal accidents occurring at junctions and for the same reasons as previously highlighted.

Further interesting and somewhat alarming statistics include:

  • Seven out of these Top 10 roads are considered minor or non-primary A roads, which suggests that (in theory) they experience less traffic, yet feature as amongst the most dangerous in the UK, with one in 22 of all non-primary A roads considered higher risk for road users in terms of road safety.
  • 35% of all accidents in the Top 10 roads listed were as a result of running off the road – often, this is due to lack of awareness of contributory factors, including excessive speed, changes in road layout and lack of awareness of corners.
  • On at least four of these higher risk roads, vehicle run-offs accounted for at least 40% of the total accidents.

Whether accidents occur at junctions, as a result of running off the road at bends, or from head-on collisions, many of them could be avoided through the deployment of sustainable and active safety measures, such as our SolarLite road studs.

This White Paper highlighting ways to make night-time driving safer is a useful resource, whilst this PDF on UK Road Traffic Accidents from Pannone contains sobering statistics, and demonstrates the need for improved usage of road safety solutions in the UK.
