Clearview Traffic continues to demonstrate CSR excellence

Here at Clearview Traffic, we believe that road safety should be at the heart of any transport infrastructure planning and central to the development of smart city networks.

We are committed to ensuring that the way in which we work and the products that we offer are as environmentally-friendly and minimally invasive as possible.

However, in 2013 we felt that we had the potential to place more emphasis on these underlying values and formalise our approach to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

A year ago, we asked our colleagues to put forward their ideas as to how we could improve the business, better support our staff, and engage with the wider community.

We received some great suggestions and the whole team has enthusiastically participated in bringing our CSR policy to life.

Here we briefly review some of the key activities that we undertook in 2013:

An ongoing challenge within the engineering sector is trying to attract more young people in to the industry. In September, we recruited a promising 18-year-old as Apprentice Field Service Engineer, and he is now working towards an Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering and progressing well. We also offer regular work experience placement opportunities for students from local secondary schools.

We have developed links with schools around our key locations. During Bike To School Week, an annual Sustrans initiative to promote sustainable transport, we worked with a local primary to run a cycle safety poster competition. Our staff judged the entries, donated prizes, and created a giant banner for the school gates featuring the winning posters. In Scotland, we worked with Glasgow City Council on their ‘Bikeability’ cycling proficiency scheme and donated bike lights to promote safe cycling at night.

Clearview Traffic also participated in Brake’s national Road Safety Week in November, working with schools across the UK to donate reflective safety equipment, planning related activities, and delivering road safety awareness assemblies.

Over the year, our staff raised nearly £1,000 for charity. We dressed up in neon colours for Brake’s Bright Day and dressed down in pyjamas for Wake Up For Work Day. Our Scotland office also participated in Pedal for Scotland, a 47-mile cycle challenge to raise money for a local charity.

On the environmental front, we have reviewed the way we dispose of office waste and are currently working on a much bigger project to improve production processes and minimise air miles. We have also introduced a Cycle To Work scheme to benefit staff that wish to purchase a bike for commuting purposes.

We have become more active in our local business community by liaising with various local groups. This has already led to a successful partnership with a neighbouring business. We have been proactive in reaching out to the Higher Education sector, Catapults, and R&D institutes and have recently submitted a grant application in collaboration with a University Department.

We have also sought to raise our profile within the transport sector nationally through active membership of a wide range of industry bodies.

As testimony to our efforts so far, we were delighted to be recognised as a National Champion for Environmental & Corporate Responsibility in the European Business Awards 2013.

We would be interested in hearing from other SMEs as to what approaches you take to CSR, the type of activities in which you engage, and the benefits you feel that you have accrued as a result.
