With 75% of cycling accidents happening at or near junctions and the Government’s plans to increase cycle use tenfold, improving safety for cyclists is a crucial issue to tackle now.
During the attendance of Clearview Traffic, at last month’s Cycle City Expo Show one of the key issues we focused on was that of junction safety for cyclists.
In a report commissioned by the Department for Transport, Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) identified, reviewed and scored 48 different traffic management techniques involving the use of new technology and practices from around the world that had the potential to enhance cyclist safety at or near junctions.
The study pinpointed six techniques that work in conjunction with some form of cycle and/or vehicle detection:
