How can we make level crossings safer?

safety at level crossings

A recent story about a near miss between a train and a cyclist at a level crossing highlighted the danger that exists at level crossings in the UK.

Network Rail are driving a focused programme forward, specifically targeted at improving safety at these critical junctions between road users, pedestrians, cyclists, trains and trams.

We’ve been working hard with them too, to prove how our SolarLite active studs can be used to improve safety at pivotal crossing points.

The images above illustrate the first live trial of this technology at Culross in Fife, Scotland. On this scheme, a dishevelled and dangerous pedestrian crossing was replaced with a new boardwalk, which was also fitted with reflective white lining and the SolarLite surface-mounted active studs, to mark out the edges of the level crossing walkway, and to prevent people from tripping over or falling onto the rail tracks during the hours of darkness.

Local residents have been delighted with the changes, as it’s made them feel safer – and has encouraged greater use of the level crossing.

The success of this trial has now led to a similar scheme design being implemented on a further 33 installations, as the first phase of a national roll-out programme for our active studs. These represent just a sample of similar installations of Clearview Intelligence active studs on level crossings across the globe – including Canada and Australia.

If you have a project that would benefit from using the SolarLite stud, please feel free to get in touch.
