How does monitoring journey times lead to reduced journey times?

At Clearview Traffic, our management team recall when journey time monitoring used to be the preserve of highly complex and expensive ANPR systems.

However, with the increasing penetration of Bluetooth devices, in vehicles and carried by road users during journeys, being able to pick up anonymous Bluetooth signatures as they pass through detector nodes and match them up with data captured from other nodes, it is easy to establish journey times.

Using this method, it’s possible to get as much as 60-70% of traffic represented, especially on major commuting routes. The likely figure is closer to 30-40% of traffic via Bluetooth detector nodes.

The Golden River M830 product has been recently been deployed across the Transport Scotland network is one example of this type of solution – offering journey time, congestion and traffic queue detection monitoring in a combination.

This comes at a fraction of the cost of ANPR, and without the need to take images of vehicle registration plates, thus removing any fear of the ‘Big Brother’ effect – and complying with the principles of the Data Protection Act.

What is the value of this data, and how does it reduce journey times? Benefits include:

  • Real-time monitoring of routes across a network
  • Road network operators spot congestion and intervene
  • Can feed road users Travel Information Services
  • Provide data for future road planning and modelling

Sharing this real-time data via travel information services such as Smartphone Apps, satellite navigation systems, information kiosks at service stations, web portals, traffic alert programmes on radio stations and VMS signs on roadsides helps road users to make informed decisions and plan their journey.

Road users can also alter their driving behaviour to avoid delays or major incidents, reducing the likelihood of congestion building up and impacting the road network as a whole.

We’re already seeing a number of Smartphone Apps that address the need to offer real-time assistance to road users to help determine the best routes.

This video highlights what the roads of the future could look like – we hope you enjoy it.
