How to get the traffic flow data you need on a small budget

As leading providers of traffic data solutions and traffic data collection systems, at Clearview Traffic we focus on making the most of limited budgets, as many of our customers are now looking for alternative and cost-effective ways to gather traffic data.

Instead of replacing existing damaged, outdated, or non-working roadside traffic monitoring equipment for which there is no budget – or the cost of replacement can no longer be justified – many road operators are now turning to temporary survey services.

Why use temporary surveys? Here’s why

Using these services to give you a basic snapshot is fine and will be suitable for some applications such as when used to complement the data received from traditional loop counters, but as we argued previously, relying on temporary surveys as your only data source is not reliable for long-term optimisation of your traffic flow.

Using these services multiple times per year can help this accuracy, but it soon becomes more expensive than replacing the kit that was decommissioned in the first place.

As surveys are not physical asset purchases and instead are classified as services, they can often be funded from an operational expenditure budget, which has typically been under less pressure than capital expenditure budgets.

Whilst this loophole enables more services to be procured, it doesn’t alter the cost of such services, and whether this can be justified to the public as offering real value for money.

Cost effective alternatives to temporary surveys

However, there are other means of still achieving your end goal and offering both citizens and road operators’ value for money.

You could opt to explore a subscription-based Data as a Service (DaaS) route, which focuses on providing you with the data you need, and alleviating the burden of managing roadside equipment.

Often delivered through Cloud-based services such as Insight, the data consumer approach may offer a more palatable and defensible alternative.

Equally, you could look at the lower-cost technologies that are becoming more popular in the market. Over the past few years, we’ve seen a rise in the deployment of self-contained permanent solutions as a low-cost alternative to temporary traffic surveys where volumetric counts is the primary need.

The M210 – a cost-effective traffic data solution

At far less than the typical cost of a seven-day survey, the M210 solar-powered Logging Stud delivers significant savings and is a self-sustaining, permanently deployable solution able to store up to one year’s worth of data between downloads.

With easy roadside access to data via a wireless dongle and a one-off installation time of 20 minutes, not only will the M210 save money, but it also reduces the disruption caused by tube counter deployment.
