Isn’t it time active transport received mainstream funding, as roads and rail do?

Currently, active transport – or walking and cycling as most of us normal humans refer to them – is only supported by the Local Sustainable Transport Fund, and whilst this has been a great way for many local authorities to secure grants for improving and adding to existing cycling and walking infrastructure, this all comes to an end in 2016.

The huge benefits to individual health, the NHS bill, the economy, congestion, productivity are vast and well documented.

The local authorities see the value and are investing heavily in some pretty impressive infrastructure; even the House of Lords see it as they are pushing for an amendment to the upcoming Infrastructure Bill to support future cycling and walking investment.

The new amendments are also supported by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), Campaign for Better Transport, Sustrans, CTC – the national cycling charity, British Cycling and Living Streets.

In an article in Highwaysindustry.com which outlined the four key pillars to this strategy, Stephen Joseph, chief executive of the Campaign for Better Transport, said: ?It?s inexcusable that the Department for Transport says it can?t guarantee spending on walking and cycling beyond 2016, when it?s already doing that for rail and roads. With the Infrastructure Bill not expected to become law until March 2015, this amendment will keep the pressure on MPs right up to election.?

So why don?t we take a leaf out of the National Assembly for Wales? book? The Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013, which formally became law on 25th September 2014, places a requirement on local authorities to continuously improve facilities and routes for walkers and cyclists and to prepare maps identifying current and potential future routes for their use.

The Act also requires new road schemes to consider the needs of pedestrians and cyclists at design stage.
