Who knew? Safer Cycling does exist outside of London!

Spring is here. The days are getting longer. The weather is getting fairer – fingers crossed!

In turn, this means more people will be getting back out on their bikes. The Capital’s approach and considerable expenditure on cycling is well documented, and has clearly stolen much of the media limelight in recent months.

April 2nd

So it’s encouraging to see cities outside of London picking up the baton and developing their own cycle superhighway infrastructure.

The schemes are a great start, but as the commentary points out, they aren't the finished article, and there's more to be done.

The schemes sadly don't go far enough to provide city-wide coverage and won?t guarantee cyclist safety on or approaching junctions, but they should be welcomed nonetheless.

A well-worn statistic is that 75% of cycling serious accidents occur on or near junctions, and that HGVs themselves are involved in 20% of cyclist fatalities: yet so far the only answer coming is London's ‘Safer Lorries Scheme

Under the scheme, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes will be required to:

  • Be fitted with larger mirrors to give the driver a better view of cyclists and pedestrians around their vehicles
  • Be fitted with side guards to protect cyclists from being dragged under the wheels in the event of a collision

And of course, there are fines or bans for those lorries that don't comply.

Clearly these measures go some way to try and address the issue, but are they sufficient? We believe that cities could in an instant change the fate of many cyclists and prevent many of the incidents that occur at traffic signals.

A simple, unobtrusive and cost-effective addition to existing infrastructure in many cases.

Technology that make cyclists visible to the traffic signals and to other road users as a result.

Result, better visibility and awareness of cyclists at junctions, cyclists not tempted to jump red lights, fairer share of the road for all, less accidents, and fewer fatalities.

Could it happen? Yes.

The technology is here today, and there are a number of options. At Clearview Traffic, we have our very own solution, the M100BR.
