Active Road Studs

Road studs have been a core offering from Clearview since the 1990s when the first Astucia solar powered road studs were first installed. Since then, we have developed and continue to improve our technology in this area. Our current offering includes the SolarLite Active Road Studs (surface and flush) and the IRS (Intelligent Road Stud) which is hard-wired and can be linked to other technology.

Making do with sub-standard visibility on the road is a recipe for disaster, collisions and in the worst case scenario, fatalities.

Conventional retro-reflective road studs have been around for decades and in that time, their performance has barely changed. They still rely on the effectiveness of the vehicle’s headlight beam to provide enough light at the right angle to reflect some of that light back at the driver to delineate the road ahead. At best, that headlight beam normally extends to about 90m.

SolarLite Active Road Studs don’t have that same dependency. They don’t rely on the headlight beam of the vehicle at all. Instead, they actively deliver light output directly in the natural line of sight of the driver from high brightness LEDs in the stud. These LED road studs are powered by solar energy captured from natural sunlight by the in-built solar panel and stored in the stud’s internal battery. As a result of this active light output, they deliver 10 x greater visibility of the road layout ahead than the traditional retro-reflective road markings, giving drivers up to 900m visibility.

SolarLite S Series Surface Studs

Conventional retro-reflective surface mounted studs are a false economy. Relying solely on the effectiveness of the vehicle’s headlight beam and the ability of the product to reflect some of that light back in the line of sight of the driver means at best they normally give only around 90m visibility.

By contrast, our SolarLite S Series Active Road Studs combine the use of retro-reflective strips with in-built high intensity LEDs powered by harnessing free solar energy, resulting in a solution that delivers 10x greater visibility of the layout of the road ahead, so up to 900m. This increases the available time to scope out the road ahead, enabling you to adjust your behaviour to the driving conditions ahead. Even in poor weather conditions, where other road markings become less visible, SolarLite surface road studs continue to shine through, guiding you safely.

Just a few hours of daylight will provide enough battery power to last days – more than enough to ensure the system operates all year round whatever the weather and wherever the location in the world.
