Slovakia – SolarLite Flush (F) studs with snowplough housing

Slovakia has adopted vision zero as the basis for their road strategy with erso (European Road Safety Observatory) reporting that statisically more than the average amount of fatalities occur in this country during rain and even more during night time.

Background

Slovakia has adopted vision zero as the basis for their road strategy with erso (European Road Safety Observatory) reporting that statisically more than the average amount of fatalities occur in this country during rain and even more during night time.

Three major 1st class routes were identified for route safety solutions by our local partner Hakom, in Slovakia on the first class roads of:
Site 1 – Banská Bystrica region – Mníchova/ Lehota
Site 2 – Banská Bystrica region – Žiar/ Hronom,
Martin/Zvolen, Uderiná/ Vidiná

Solution

Over 3000 SolarLite Flush (F) Active Road Studs stretching more than 250km were installed in 2022 at each of the 3 sites. This now provides drivers with a clearer indication of the road layout ahead whilst improving the safety of the route through clear delineation at night time.

The solar studs provided a cost-effective, environmentally friendly and long term solution to night-time road safety, with minimal damage to the studs from the snow ploughs. A testament to this successful solution is the procurement for a further 3,769 in 2023 and early discussions for a third phase in 2024.

Key Benefits

  • Clearer road layout and improved route safety
  • Lower lifetime costs than traditional road studs
  • 10 times greater visibility for drivers than traditional reflective road studs
  • Long lasting, carefree operation with snow plough resistant housing
  • Highlight roundabouts, sharp bends, dips in the road
