Milton Keynes City Council, in partnership with Clearview Intelligence, delivered one of the UK’s most ambitious active travel lighting schemes. Funded through Milton Keynes’ Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), the project saw the installation of over 4,000 SolarLite Path Studs/lights across more than 120+ key locations. This targeted, data-led deployment transformed the Redway network, improving safety, sustainability and inclusivity by connecting bus stops, housing estates and active travel routes throughout the city.
.
Many walking and cycling corridors in Milton Keynes historically lacked consistent low-level lighting, particularly during winter. Sections of the Redways network felt unsafe or were difficult to navigate, reducing their year-round use. While parts of the city’s “Super Routes” received LED upgrades, large stretches remained poorly lit due to maintenance issues and budget constraints.
Expanding conventional street lighting was not viable so the council needed a solution to enhance night-time safety and
accessibility while meeting environmental and sustainability objectives.
The SolarLite Path Stud, specifically built for pedestrian and cycle
environments, offers:
Targeted site selection ensures investment is prioritised where safety challenges are greatest and sustainable travel uptake is most likely.
By combining innovation, sustainability, and social value, Milton Keynes City Council and Clearview Intelligence demonstrate how solar powered technology can deliver meaningful environmental, social, and transport benefits. The project makes public spaces safer, greener, and more inclusive.
The project stands out as a winner of the Best Technology and
Innovation Award at the Milton Keynes Business Awards and a Finalist for Best Local Transport Project at the Decarbonisation Awards, underscoring its position as a leading example of active travel innovation and sustainable infrastructure delivery.
